How to Protect Your Home from Mold

Mold may be good for the planet, but it can be detrimental if it finds its way into your home.

There are just over 5,400 species of mammals in the world that range from the largest blue whale to the smallest shrew. A diverse collection indeed. How many species of mold do you think there are? Unless you’re a mycologist, you are likely to underestimate their numbers. There are over 100,000 species of mold! They help convert dead organic material back into the basic building blocks in order to be used again–the world’s natural recyclers. While most are harmless, there are some which can cause real health issues if not removed from your home. Here are a few tips on how you can prevent mold and protect your home.

Protecting Your Home from Mold

Maintain Humidity Control

  • Keep control of the humidity with air conditioners or dehumidifiers and keep it between 30 and 60 percent.
  • Don’t install carpets in rooms that tend to get damp like kitchens, bathrooms, or basements.

Keep Belongings Dry

  • You need to inspect your hoses for any mold growth. Consider replacing hoses to your HVAC systems every five years. Here are a few systems which could use the hose replacement:
    ∆ Bathroom toilets
    ∆ Refrigerator ice/water dispenser
    ∆ Washing machine
    ∆ Dishwasher
    ∆ Bathroom/kitchen sinks

Post-Water Damage Protocol

After your home falls victim to water damage here are a few things you should do quickly before mold settles in:

  • Properly dry or remove any and all soaked carpets, padding, and upholstery within 24 hours. Anything that can’t be properly dried within this time needs to be discarded.
  • Stagnant water broods well for mold. Make sure to dry all standing water as soon as you spot it.

Mold damage may be covered under your homeowners policy–depending on the source of the moisture. For all of your homeowners insurance needs in Dallas and surrounding areas in Texas, visit the professionals at North American Advantage Insurance Services.
