How to Prepare Your Home for Spring

Winter is finally over and on comes spring, do you know how to prepare your home for this wet season?

The winds of winter have died and brought upon the dream of spring. Oh! What a great season with green grass, blossoming flowers, and the sweet earthy smell of petrichor in the air as cumuli form the deep and dark gray rain clouds overhead. Is your home ready for the spring? Here are a few tips on how you can prepare your home for the spring and everything it has to throw at you and your home.

  1. Weatherstripping. Weatherstripping is a fairly easy task that anyone can do and requires very little time. Weatherstrip your doors and windows to ensure that the water, and warm and humid air stay out. (You can get weatherstrips at your local hardware store.)
  2. Unclog your gutters. Your gutters allow for rainwater to be directed down and away from the foundation of your home. Unfortunately, leaves, fur, feathers, and litter can accumulate in your spouts and effectively clog your gutters which leads to overspills that negatively affect your foundation. Before the rains start pouring from the heavens above, make sure that your gutter spouts are thoroughly unclogged.
  3. Inspect your roof. Your roof helps funnel that rainwater into the gutters. This means that any imperfections on your roof can lead to leaks and damages. Inspect your home’s roof after every storm and look for any shingles that are curling, cracking or just plain missing.

Preparing for spring only takes you so far. The proper homeowners insurance policy can provide you with the necessary coverage for all of your home’s requirements.
